La Roche aux Fées - 20090108 19979

The so-callel fairies rock is a remarkable megalithic site probably erected 5,000 years ago, that is during the neolithic period. The huge stone blocks were quarried 4 km away in order to built a tomb. A dolmen usually consists of three or more upright stones supporting a large flat horizontal capstone (table). Dolmens were covered with earth. The all thing is called a tumulus. Here, in La Roche aux Fées, as in many other places, the covering has weathered away, leaving only the stone skeleton of the burial mound intact. The word Dolmen itself originates from the breton expression taol maen, which means stone table. It was first used by archaeologist Théophile Corret de la Tour d'Auvergne.
